I keep hearing about the "spotty 3G coverage" for AT&T - today I saw this in a PCWorld article about the new iPhone 3GS:
It's not just San Francisco. My colleague Galen Gruman had the same experience in Manhattan recently : mostly EDGE coverage, with a few 3G spots such as in midtown -- and no coverage at all on Wall Street. I hear the same complaints from AT&T users throughout much of the West and East coasts.
I haven't been in San Francisco with the phone, but I have been to Manhattan twice in the last few months. The first time I walked from Penn Station to SoHo, and the second time, I walked a couple of blocks to 9th and 34th. That's hardly an extensive survey, but at no time did my 3G coverage fall over to Edge. Locally (Columbia MD), it's all 3G - I only have Edge when I turn the 3G radio off manually.
I'll have to keep looking as I keep traveling (I'll be in Boston and Des Moines later this month), but thus far, I'm taking this whole spotty thing a whole lot less seriously.
