I've been experimenting with the Picture in Picture feature of iMovie - this little tutorial from MacMost was invaluable for helping me get started. Here's what I've learned beyond that:

  • Capture both videos you intend to use at the same screen resolution. Otherwise, you get results like the video I released earlier this week
  • iMovie won't import H.264, or even Apple intermediate codec if you have hinted streaming on. Save your video using the intermediate codec, and turn hinting off. You'll change that later for the final product

Then it's just a matter of synching the two videos up - I was testing with a QT Pro video of me as a "talking head" and an IShowU screen capture. Another thing I'll have to practice - if I want "mini me" to look like I'm looking at the screen, it'll take work :)
