I was listening to "This Week in Tech" yesterday (and as an aside, Tom Merrit really, really knows how to run a show - for anyone doing a podcast, it was a "listen and learn" kind of thing). Anyway - they got onto AT&T (which has been a whipping boy of sorts for the tech elite for awhile now), and it was mentioned that AT&T simply doesn't have enough bandwidth (or enough spectrum to have enough bandwidth) in the San Francisco Bay area.
I didn't give that a lot of thought at the time, but this morning I ran across this ant-AT&T screed from MG Siegler. He has a lot to say about problems with his iPhone service, but this caught my eye:
And it fails at it far too often. Depending on where you are here in Bay Area (I'm using that as an example because that'swhere I live, but the problems are hardly confined to here), there is basically no AT&T reception. This is what Malik noticed all those months ago. And as more iPhones are being sold, it's getting progressively worse.
I'm wondering - has AT&T managed to create a bigger problem for itself simply by having bad service in the tech pundit heavy Bay area? I've had no issues with the service (other than being irked by non-rollout of tethering). My iPhone has worked great here in Maryland - this lost messages thing that Siegler starts with didn't happen here. It's worked great in Cincinnati and New York as well. I'll find out about Boston and Des Moines in the next 10 days.
So I end up with this: if AT&T botching coverage in the Bay area, and thus giving itself a huge black eye due to the vastly amplified echo chamber of that area's tech elite?
