PCWorld reports that last week's DDOS attack on Twitter is still impacting the service:
Specifically, Twitter has had to take defensive actions that are preventing some third-party Twitter applications from communicating with the company's API (application programming interface). In addition, many users can't post Twitter messages via SMS (Short Message Service), as Twitter continues to defend itself against the attack, which the company described as "ongoing" in the blog.
I haven't had any trouble from Twitterific on the iPhone, but I have been unable to follow anyone from the web interface. That's not a third party issue; that's a core part of the system. Apparently, the attack was still going on as of yesterday (and for all I know, today as well:
Stone also reiterated that the attack is still ongoing, but that no data or personal information "of any kind" has been compromised.
As I said at the time, I expect to see more of this sort of thing. It doesn't seem to be hard to pull off, and the global nature of the web makes it easy to launch an attack from a virtually undetectable source...
