Dave Winer is a perfect example of the Silicon Valley echo chamber on tech news. Witness his comparison of Apple and Amazon:
Apple would do well to throw in the towel on this system, they're in a no-win situation. They're spending money to lose money. Amazon is making tech, and money, and their VPs are enjoying their weekend while Phil Schiller is hearing tales of woe from developers (and presumably from people inside Apple as well).
A quick visit to Yahoo's finance pages for Apple and Amazon tells a slightly different story though - Amazon is doing well, and Apple has been doing amazingly well.
Sure, Apple should address some of the issues around the app store, but thus far, all the yelling has been confined to a small group of interconnected people. It's sort of like the infamous New Yorker's question about how Nixon won re-election in 1972, since "no one I know voted for him". Out in the real world, no one seems to care all that much about Apple's supposed misdeeds.
