PCWorld has a story about the multiple interesting data loss stories this week: Sidekick/Danger, Apple (the guest login fiasco), and Facebook (which has apparently had a small, but significant number of accounts just go poof), and a DNS error in Sweden:

The lessons du jour: Back up early, back up often, and don't rely entirely on something that might not be there when you need it most.

Filling me with confidence: the backup drive I use for Time Machine on my Macbook Pro started making weird noises and throwing errors. As it happens, that drive has been the cause of my lockups; it was a coincidence that they started when I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Fortunately, a new drive should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow.
