Chrome for OS X doesn't have Gears support, which led Harry McCracken to this quote from Google:

"We are excited that much of the technology in Gears, including offline support and geolocation APIs, are being incorporated into the HTML5 spec as an open standard supported across browsers, and see that as the logical next step for developers looking to include these features in their websites."

Which sounds an awful lot like a soft kill of Gears, with HTML 5 being the replacement - possibly with some of Gears lifted out to fill cracks. Read the whole thing - it sounds like Google's been dropping hints on this for awhile.
