In one industry after another, we see the same pattern:

  • We must have DRM, or everything will be stolen!
  • Err, maybe not, but DRM actually helps consumers!
  • Well, ok, maybe not, but it's still good for publishers!
  • Err, ok, it's terrible for all of us

We went through this with music, and we're only between steps 1 and 2 for audio books, e-books, and movies. It'll all run the same way as music did, although along the way a bunch of people will get hosed out of their purchases (PlaysForSure, anyone?).

It's just tedious to watch the same play run over and over again, when anyone with a brain knows what the ending looks like...
