CNet reports that an unpatched (i.e., just shipped from the vendor) Windows PC will last 20 minutes (on average) before malware compromises it. It can be a lot less than that; when I first got a WiFi card, I wasn't using a software firewall on my PC (I have a hardware firewall in the office). The notebook was attacked within 5 minutes when I used public WiFi.
