Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the most widely used standard in modeling software in the industry. Since its inception in 1997, UML 2.0 is the first major revision to the standard. There are several improvements in UML 2.0 which made it more towards the model driven development paradigms.
The most important improvement in UML 2.0 is the increase of architectural support for modeling complex systems. The Part, Connector and Port help to describe the internal structure of the systems. UML 2.0 also introduces the inheritance of behavior in state machines and encapsulation of sub machines through the Entry and Exit points. The encapsulation of components was improved by using complex ports with protocol state machines that can "control" interaction with the environment. The specification, realization, "wiring" aspects of the components, action and activity are also improved in UML 2.0.
VP-UML is now UML 2.0 ready! New diagram types like Composite Structure Diagram, Timing Diagram and new notations such as Part, Port, Connector; State Entry/Exit Point and moreĀ are supported.
