Like most successful Java open-source projects, Eclipse also has a handful of commercially supported distributions. Among the more popular ones is MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench, a subscription-based Eclipse distribution maintained by Genuitec, LLC. The latest MyEclipse version, released today, provides full compatibility with the free Eclipse 3.2.2 release, and also promises compatibility with Windows Vista.
According to Wayne Parrott, vice president of product development for Genuitec, the biggest value MyEclipse provides is tools compatibility:
We know that waiting for tools compatibility with the latest and greatest technology is frustrating, and we're proud to allow our users to take advantage of the most recent advances.
In addition, MyEclipse aims for an international audience with a Japanese-language version:
Not only are we delivering this new functionality to our English-speaking customers, but through our partnership with Hitachi, we're able to spearhead these technologies into the Japanese market with native-language development and support.
MyEclipse includes dozens of pre-tested plugins featuring, among other things, support for:
Various Web frameworks (Struts, Spring, JSF, JSP)
Visual Web designer for JSF
Matisse4MyEclipse, a port of the NetBeans Matisse UI designer
Persistence frameworks, such as Hibernate
Design and modeling tools, such as bundled UML editor
Most payware, commercially supported open-source distributions have thus far aimed at enterprise infrastructure. MyEclipse applies a similar concept to a developer product. What do you think of the kind of plugin integration MyEclipse provides?
