In a video at, Bill Foote, Sun's Blu-ray Disc Java (BDJ) architect, explains Java's role in high definition Blu-ray Discs, and demonstrates the kind of interactivity it enables.

Today Toshiba announced it would discontinue its HD-DVD business, which leaves Blu-ray Disc as the winner in the latest VHS/Betamax-like war for home video formats. Whereas HD-DVD used ECMAScript for programming interactivity, Blu-ray uses Java. Thus, Java ended up being an integral part of next generation home video.
