In version 3 of the book, all the credits to the people who contributed comments and suggestions via the feedback mechanism appear to have been removed.

Personally, I put in a large amount of time noting comments, typing them in to make a better book. I wasn't expecting a contribution when I started this, but after it was given, to remove it I find upsetting.

Granted, the list is probably long, but for this book I suggest putting it back in. The next book Artima publishes may not want to list the feedback contributers at all to avoid this issue, but I think this book is out of the bag.

BTW, how much work did the Silicon Valley Patterns people do? Only one of those names has ever sent an email to a scala mailing list from what I see (Raoul Duke), so it seems odd for people who are not that part of the community get more credit then those that are. I'm aware of many Scala users who contributed comments/suggestions back on the book.

Hi Blair,

We definitely appreciate all of your comments and those the other readers who submitted them. They have really helped a lot. At least at one point I think you had contributed the most. The reason we decided not to list all names in the final book was that it was just too many names, so we just thanked all of you without naming you instead. We considered thanking those who contributed the most comments, but it seemed a bit arbitrary where to draw the line. And most people contributed one or two comments, so including their names seemed to water down the names of the others in the acknowledgements. I did say in the PrePrint v2 that the long list may not make it into the printed book, so I believe I did give you all fair warning.

As far as the Silicon Valley Patterns group goes, they have been reviewing the book for maybe six weeks now, meeting every Tuesday night with me and giving me feedback as a group as they go through the book.

Hi Blair,

One other thing was that I got the names in the PrePrint2 acknowledgements from the Artima accounts of the people who posted comments. The names are public, so it fits within our privacy policy to display them. We display them on the profile page, for example. But they may not be real names. So I felt a bit funny about putting names of people I'd never met, some of which may be fake names. There's a fellow here who posts under Merriodoc Brandybuck:

http://www.artima.com/profile/11525

Maybe that's his real name but it is an awful lot like Meriadoc Brandybuck from the Lord of the Rings. Chet Underwood used to post here a lot too, but I haven't heard from him in a while. I know that's a pseudonym.

I'll point Martin and Lex to your post and see what they have to say. I know people like seeing their names in books, and we really do appreciate the comments people have posted. The determining factor may end up being that when printing books offset, you need a multiple of 8 pages (or sometimes 16). That's why sometimes in books you see several blank pages at the end. So if we end up shy of 8 pages, it won't add any extra cost or kill any extra trees to include everyone's names. So it may come down to that.

Another way to see your name in the book, though, is to submit a testimonial. The testimonials will have names and affiliations under them. You can post them at the URL I sent in the last email announcement of the new PrePrint. The testimonials will be right at the very very beginning, the first few pages of the book.

FYI, we ultimately decided is to print the names of the most helpful comment contributors in the book, and thank others en masse.

Thanks! My name in a tech book I like ! (besides my thesis :) ).
By the way, I think the timing for publishing the book will be good, as the Scala plugins will be more mature.
Now, where was that page explaining how to upgrade from ebook to printed book?

Hi Javier,

Well, it's true that the later we are, the more mature the ecosystem. But part of the ecosystem is this book, so we need to get it out the door as soon as possible. We are very close now, though. As soon as I get a few more things in there we'll have a new PrePrint for everyone, and you'll be able to see what kind of shape it's in. Also, I've already updated the acknowledgments with the names of people who contributed more than I think 10 comments. Couldn't name everyone, but we definitely appreciate all the feedback. It has helped us make the book much better.

As far as how to upgrade. We'll be sending an email to everyone who just bought the PDF once the book is ready to be shipped.

Thanks.

Bill

What I would like to see (but I'm afraid it a bit too late) those comments to be [automatically] displayed in this forum.
I believe that it would be very helpful for the community to see each other comments, read responses from the book authors and to be able to discuss. Yes, some of comments were merely about typos, but other definitely worth seeing and discussing by community. It would make things more interactive.
I found myself browsing through links like http://www.artima.com/backtalk/talkback?n=81&v=3 just for reading of what other said.

Hi Vladimir,

Not too late, and a good idea. Right now the discuss link just goes here, but there's no reason we couldn't tag discussion comments with section tags, so you could see other comments that relate to that section. We'll put something like that on the drawing board.

Thanks.

Bill
