Macromedia hopes to make its Flash animation player a "first-class citizen" on PCs with a new addition that allows the software to operate outside of a Web browser" says this ZDNet article:

Such functionality rich user interfaces taken out of the browser was also one of the original ideas behind the ServiceUI standard for Jini services.
