The GigaSpaces Platform is a software infrastructure designed for developing clustered and synchronized collaborative distributed applications and services. The platform is the first commercial implementation of Sun Microsystems' JavaSpaces(TM) technology. It was designed to meet the needs of large scale enterprise applications that need to synchronize, share, and exchange information and activities between its distributed components in a loosely coupled, efficient, and simple manner.

The GigaSpaces Platform provides flexible and robust clustering features such as replication, fail-over, and load balancing for scalability and 24x7 availability. The platform behaves as a distributed shared memory that enables virtualization of multiple data sources, handles global session information, boosts performance via distributed caching, and provides integration with Web Services and C++.

The GigaSpaces Platform's purpose is to significantly ease the development of distributed and collaborative systems. It provides much of the common functionality required for distributed systems, which simplifies the development task, particularly when you can model your task as a flow of objects between systems distributed over a network.

JavaSpaces technology applications communicate to each other by releasing objects (data and behavior) into a space. Programs read, write, and take objects that are of interest to them from the space.
