passing java stdout to unix scripts

I have a java program running that will print various variable values to stdout. I want to use these parameters as input to a unix shell sript. I have tried the unix pipe | but does not work. For security reasons I cannot use java to write to a file and have unix shell use cut to extract the fields, so must pass stdout from java to shell scripts on the fly.
