This may be a bit late, but :

Your right. Java applets are not allowed to have their own Classloaders because of security concerns.

But couldn't you walk through the classes and invoke instanceof() for each one. That way the class would be loaded by the primordial classloader. Of course I haven't tried this in your particular case, but it should work.
