The Star Challenge 2008 @ Fusionopolis is on. The objective of this technology competition, organized by A*STAR, is to encourage participation from international teams to develop new, interesting and practical search techniques in the field of search engine technology.
Registration for this world-class competition began in January 2008 and is open to top software engineers, leading researchers and search media enthusiasts from around the world.
We would like to invite you and your chosen teammates to be an official team and to take part. You could be part of the winning team and walk away with US$100,000 in cash!
This competition consists of 2 main challenges – voice and video search challenges. The former consists of three subtasks; where an example would be to retrieve all segments that contain the query IPA sequence regardless of its spoken languages. The latter also consists of three subtasks; where an example would be to retrieve all visually similar segments from a query provided in the form of a single image.

What criteria distinguish between an ordinary software engineer and a "top" software engineer? At what point does a reasearcher become "leading"? Do we only find out when we try to enter the competition and are rejected? Why aren't search media enthusiasts subject to the same ambiguous cut-off criteria?
