If I've downloaded the free JDK and I'm building an application with it, do I need to purchase a liscence to sell it for profit?

I've never heard of anything like that. You are only selling your Application, not the runtime environment, which exists on a user's PC. If you're worried, checkout the Jabarri Java Applet store http://www.jabarri.com/sell-software/sell-java-applets.cfm
