I just went through the SUN‘s tech artical about Become.com at  http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/WebServices/become/



It uses 30 fully distributed servers, a total of 160 to 180 GB of
memory, with roughly 5000 threads. And the search result look pretty
neat, ok at last some one is giving Google some competition… nice..
