There is somewhat a large body of misinformation of where to define global variables in Debian. According to Debian Policy 9.9 applications and users are not ot add any global variables to /etc/profile file.

The correct location for global variables that user must add if they are using non deb packaged applications is /etc/environment. Whereas the profile file requires an export statement the environment file does not require an export statement.

My past suggestions were obviously confusing my unix experience with my past linux experience and my current experience in Debian. The reason why normal deb packages do not add global vars to /etc/profile is that they use a wrapper start-up script to set global variables used by the application.

This only applies to Debian as some derivatives of Debian do change this policy to suit their own needs.
