On one of my rare visits to TSS, I found a link to an interesting article on CNET about Java written in October 26, 1999. Java was about four years old by then. Quote from the article: "Java may be one of the hottest development languages of the future, but it's getting a mostly chilly reception now, according to a study. "

The drawbacks mentioned back then:
  1. Slow in desktops
  2. Java standard not managed by a open standards body
  3. Scalability
  4. "Write once, run anywhere" not true
After four years we still are stuck with the same problems (although point 3 is arguable, its true with ATG Dynamo Server ;-) ).
