Eclipse offers a pack of plugins designed to demonstrate what you can get with SWT, the Standard Widget Toolkit. In the SWT Example Launcher view, you can choose which example you can see and, with some of them, you can play with the various parameters used to build the widgets (see image below). That helped me a lot to choose which parameter to use to get the visual style or behavior desired. You can get the Example Plug-ins in the downloads area of Eclipse site.
