The second edition of my book, AppleScript: The Definitive Guide, includes an Appendix entitled "Apple Events Without AppleScript," which describes several alternative ways to construct and send Apple events to scriptable applications. One such way is Appscript, using Python. Now the author has been developing a Ruby version of Appscript, dubbed rb-appscript
