Just when it looked like the A's would go down 0-1 in an ALCS for the 2nd straight year, Erubiel Durazo hit a 2-out 2-strike single, tying the game in the bottom of the 9th. Before that, Ricardo Rincon blew an awesome effort by Tim Hudson, allowing the go-ahead 2-run HR in the 7th inning. Things looked bleak.
A new acquisition, Duraz wasn't here for the past 3 post-season failures, and his bat showed it. While Tejada and Chavez bats were frozen (typical of Oakland's past post-season failures for the 3-4-5 hitters), Durazo was responsible for driving in 3 RBIs, including the one that could finally move the A's past the ALCS.
But before the A's could claim victory, they needed a "Jeter-like" play for the ages, when Gold Glove winner Eric Chavez stabbed a sure rocket double down the line off the ground (behind him) with men on base, and raced to the 3rd base bag to save 2 runs and the game. Then in the bottom of the 12th with the bases loaded, Ramon Hernandez put down a squeeze bunt on his own, scoring Chavez from 3rd. One of the most gutsy plays I've ever seen in the post-season.
So, now it's on to Game #2. Time to put the foot to the throat and take the Red Sox out while they're down. This is no time to let up. The A's have the emotional advantage and they can't afford to let that go.
