I was just reading some of the proposed ideas for congressional bills being floated around. Now that the federal moratorium on state taxes for Internet access expired, we could se a slew of new "taxes" hit our ISPs - and they'll end up passing the cost on to us.
On idea being floated out there that REALLY worries me is the tax of 'x cents' per e-mail sent. Now, I don't know how this could possibly be monitored, but if it is you'll never have to worry about spam again. This bill alone will KILL E-MAIL as a legitimate communication method. You'll send ups seeing all sorts of proprietary messaging systems being built on other ports that can only talk to each other (kind of like those old 'Friends & Family' plans for your long-distance a few years back).
Anyway, I recommend that you keep a close eye on what's going on in Washington over the next year. Contact your congress representative and let's them know that this is a very bad idea.
