Interesting panel discussion here at OOPSLA - Innovation Practices in Large Organizations. The thing is, I don't think the points mentioned are unique to large organizations, they just apply more obviously. I really like some of the points made by Linda Rising:
- No one is an innovator in all aspects of life
- Early Adopters and Inn Innovators are not necessarily the same
- People don't necessarily decide to go along with an idea for logical reasons - in fact, external, unrelated factors are often far more key (personal relationships, etc)
- Coercion doesn't work - eg, "making an organization agile"
Another point the panel is harping on is the difficulties that crop up with distance (distributed organizations). Most of communication is non-verbal, and that simply doesn't convey over conference calls, shared screens, or even video conferences.
Anyway, it's a great session, and the stuff being talked about applies to any organizational change, not just "innovation". There's a guy filming the session, and I think the content will all be available via InfoQ sometime after the conference. Well worth checking this one out.
