I went with my wife to vote this morning, before lunch. We ran into a long line, and they were pretty nice about letting my wife (who has bad knees) sit down and let me hold her spot in line. The interesting thing is, the line wasn't long because of a crowd, and it wasn't long because of some swarm of new voters - here's a picture I shot in the gym:

See all those unused machines? They had fewer than half the machines in use the whole time I was there. The problem? They only had 4 people checking voters in against the voter rolls. This made me wonder about the long lines elsewhere - how many are a result of high turnout, and how many are simply a result of some of the crappy voting systems we have? I don't know the answer to that, but it's a good question.
