Software Design Book Information Needed Posted: Jul 10, 2005 1:37 PM

Hello. I am a technical writer needing to learn the basics of software design including the software design life cycle and software delivery. I have a bit of information already through what I've learned awhile ago in programming classes, and most of my web searching revealed just class syllabi. so I am thinking of purchasing a good book on the subject that can lead me from step to step in the software design process.

The books I have been looking at are:

"Code Complete, Second Edition", by Steve McConnell

This book looks interesting, and is highly rated on Amazon, but i'm not sure if it focuses on the total lifecycle, or just the coding aspects of it.

I was looking at software engineering books, and most of these are MUCH too expensive, at $90-$100, and I anticipate that these would go into too much detail for my purposes, but there was one, called "Software Engineering for Game Developers" by John P. Flynt, Ph.D. and Omar Salem, which claims the principles described can apply to any software development project, this book just uses a game to illustrate the steps through the cycle. The step-by-step process is what I am looking for, and I wonder if Code Complete steps through the lifecycle.

so if anyone has experiences with these of other books, please let me know!

Thanks!

If you want to know the entire lifecycle of a project i.e. How it is executed, then I would recommend
"Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change, Second Edition
By Kent Beck, Cynthia Andres"

If you want to know only about design, then please email me your exact requirements. I am sure that I will be able to suggest you a good book. I conduct many trainings on design.
