UML Certification Posted: May 8, 2004 2:16 PM

I've been working with UML for some time now and am thinking about taking the new OMG certification exams (http://www.umlcert.org/en/index.html) as some form of formal recognition of that experience. There's lots of information about the exams at the above site except for any sample questions, which apparently don't exist yet.

Has anyone done the exams or can anyone give me an idea of the type of questions asked? Do the exams require a knowledge of the application of UML in design situations (in other words, practical questions) or do I need to learn the relevant parts (http://www.omg.org/uml-certification/UML_2-ToC-Fundamental.pdf) of the UML 2.0 specification (http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/apps/doc?ptc/03-08-02.pdf) verbatim?

I'm not after exact questions or anything which would give me an unfair advantage, I'd just like to get a better idea of what the questions are like - I found that practice tests were one of the best forms of learning when I did the Java certifications and not having them for the UML exams is a real bind.

In the same vein, does anyone have an opinion on whether these exams are even worth taking and how recognised they are in the SE community?

If you are interested in taking IBM's UML cert, then there is a exam simulator from www.whizlabs.com.

Certification exam purely goes by the content in UML 2.0 SUPERSTRUCTURE - FINAL ADOPTED SPECIFICATION (www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?ptc/03-08-02)

Concentrate on
1) Basic Notations and Stereotypes
2) Most of the Questions are diagram based (Should read through all figures associated to syllabus)
3) Dont Concentrate on Kernel Diagrams or
4) Descriptions, Semantics and notations, presentations options sections are very important from exam perspective
5) Dont concentrate on Kernel Diagrams, Associations, Constraints
