--Step 1--
Go to
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/
and download the JDK 1.2.2 for you operating system. The JDK stands
for Java Development Kit. You need this software in order to
program in Java.

--Step 2--
Go to
http://web2.java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/
This is SUN Microsystems (the creators of Java) free online book
on Java. This is a great place to start to learn Java.

--Step 3--
Get yourself a couple of good books on Java. You can get reviews
on Java books at
http://www.codecollection.com/java/books/
