Primitive Conversion

Let i is a valied java integer and c is a character.
int i = 20;
char c= 10;
1st case:
When I say
c= c+i;
It gives an error. i.e., Ok
2nd case:
c+=i;
Doesn't give an error and prints the result 30.
What is the reason?????
