design of communication framework between applet and servlet

i am presently working on a high level design of the communication between an applet and servlet for highspeed data transfer.this is a basic frame work and the solution must be as generic as possible.in future, it must also provide support for not only the applet servlet communication but also other types of a client server type applications.

any ideas in this direction would be very helpful.
