japplets in msie calls an event twice

This happens in msie 5.0 on windows 2000 professional. When a swing applet is loaded in to the browser the init method is called twice. This can observed by running the java console in the internet explorer. In addition to this events (implemented listener method) are also called twice. Can any body help with this problem. Help is greatly appreciated.
