can we register action listener to all objects? i have a prob here?

when i created an Checkbox object
say
Checkbox ck=new Checkbox();
ck.addActionListener(this);

when i compile this code its saying cannot resolve symbol
ck.addActionListener(classname);
^
Can we register ActionListeners to TextField,TextArea,and to these checkboxes???

When i registered an ActionListener to a TextArea oblect its showing the same error??
