Well at the beginning there was only awt.
Swing is newer better designed... but available only as a
separate lib for jdk1.1 and has been included
only in Java2(jdk1.2 or later).
If you don't care about making an app that work relying only
on the jdk1.1 libs use swing.
For instance you can do a lot more with a combobox than with
a choice (chose how the list is render, ad tooltips .....)
