Applet to JDBC

I had read through the other topics related or same as this. But still I couldn't find the answer. How do I link an applet to the database? What other tools do we really need?? I heard about httpTunnelling, but how to you really utilise and make us of it? Hope anyone kind soul who knows the answer can give me some advice replies soon.
