Can I suggest you something since I suspect that the string has lot of non printable charactors in it... When you are printing the string 's' try to do something like this... System.out.println("'"+s+"'"); and if the string has only 'hello' then the result will be 'hello' but if the string is more than that who knows the result could be 'hello ' something like that....
