Passing System command from Java to Operating System shell and result back to the Java Application

I am a student doing my bachelors in computer applications, I am working on a project(programming a telnet server in Java).I actually have a query on which i have been thinking. I just hope that you may help me out of this. The query is the command which is passed from the client to the server, has to be executed on the shell. I would like to know how can we pass the command from Java to the Operating System shell and the result back to the Java application.
