Java drawing on entire screen

I have a graphics-intensive Java application which is mixed AWT/SWING. Occasionally when a scroll method is called, it seems to take over the entire display - possibly clearing the entire screen to white, which is the color used to clear the background before a bitblt prior to scrolling.

Anyone out there have experience with this behavior?
