Applets, Files and Permission

Hi, can an applet access files for upload/download from/to the customer's computer (ie, can a customer upload a file through an applet to a server, and download a file through an applet from the server)? Secondly, can I use JPanel, JButton, JTextField, etc. in an applet? If so, do I just use it the way I would in a stand-alone app? Thanks a lot
