links to several packages that let you handle multiple clients
with a single thread and nonblocking I/O. That will definitely
be able to do what you want, albeit with a different
paradigm.

This kind of thing is going to be standardized by
the JSR-51 committee and included in the Java spec
by sometime next year, I think.
