Windows and Runtime.exec()

I have a some straight forward code that uses Runtime.exec() to launch an external program which works fine ... almost. Everytime it runs, a new command line window appears and captures the focus. As I am running this program a lot, and it performs this operation a lot, it virtually ties up my PC since I cannot keep the focus on any other window. I have tried cmd /c but that does the same thing. I am running JDK 1.3 on W2K. Any ideas?
