a possible solution is PolicyTool
for details visit java site
the thing is , applet is not allowed to access the hard drive and data on it since its a big security hazard but once thru policy tool u make the applet a trusted one, it can do so - u hv to give the read, write, execute,delete permission explicitly so that these operations could be carried out
